The latest reboot of our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man has a sequel which *SPOILER ALERT* ends with a shameless set up for another sequel. And so the saga continues and long may Marvel’s whimsical money making movie machine reign over the viewing public. I for one am happy to keep handing over my hard-earned cash for more Avengers based escapades and this movie had enough tongue-in-cheek slapstick to make me feel happy that everyone involved was consenting to the exchange of money for artistic integrity.
This Marvel movie in particular was easy to watch, funny and dramatic enough to keep me entertained, and had Jake Gyllenhaal in it so what’s not to like? The plot was obvious, the “teenage” kids and their storylines were amusing and the special effects department had a field day. Keep making these movies team, they’re a license to print money. Good for you guys!
One thing I will say is that Zendaya as MJ is a stroke of genius casting. The transformation of that character has been refreshing to watch and goes to show that thinking outside the box when casting iconic roles can really pay off.
Another achievement in this film is the cinematography of the big special effects sequences. They were paced very well and although the action felt fast and furious, I still knew exactly what was going on unlike in some movies where all you see is either a blurry mess of limbs and machinery flying around or, like the latest X Men offering, Dark Phoenix, each player taking their turn doing their thing until the fight is over.
It was also nice to see a group of Americans travel around Europe, crossing borders left, right and centre, changing their plans and not having to worry about visas. Just saying y’all Schengen has its advantages.
If you’re sick of Marvel movies don’t bother seeing this one. No ground is significantly broken here.
If like me you are happy to move on from drinking the Marvel Kool-Aid to having it delivered intravenously then definitely see this movie.
